Seventy years earlier the Bay and College corridor was one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in downtown Toronto. In 2000 Great West Life, owners of the College Park complex, were looking for a strong developer with a proven track record to build a multi-family project on the property, with a view to breathe new life into the area. Only a project with bold vision on a grand scale could restore this area to its former glory, and Canderel was chosen to take on the challenge.
The proposal was to build two of the tallest condominiums in the City of Toronto, 45 and 51 storey buildings consisting of 1200 residential suites and 12 townhouses backing on to a park on the east side of the site. No developer at that time had considered embarking on a plan to create two landmarks of this magnitude in the heart of downtown. But Canderel, through its dealings with the City, was also able to create a direct underground connection to the subway at College Park from both towers, as well as receive approval for close to 9000 sq. ft. of commercial space at grade.
What began as the loftiest of goals has now become reality. Owners of condominium units in the buildings have seen their property values increase substantially, and the Bay and College corridor has become one of the most sought after locations in the city to live and work.
In recognition of its phenomenal achievement, Canderel has received numerous accolades from the development industry, the City of Toronto, and from the local business community with respect to the quality and architectural design of the project.
