Montreal, March 24, 2004 – Quebec singer Nanette Workman and Sylvain Girard of the Montreal Alouettes, spokespersons for the 15th annual Défi Corporatif Canderel, which will be held on Friday, May 7th, 2004, visited the cancer research centres to see first-hand the tangible benefits made possible by the Défi funds.
The Défi Corporatif Canderel is one of the most significant fundraising events in Montreal. Over the last 14 years, the Défi has raised in excess of $4 million for the university cancer research centres at McGill and the Université de Montréal.
Nanette noted: "I am proud to have the opportunity to support a team that can make a difference and help bring new hope to those individuals and their families affected by this disease."
"By representing the Montreal sports community, my support for the Défi Corporatif Canderel should help to create awareness of the efforts being made and how important it is to support cancer research if we want to succeed" said Sylvain Girard.
Mr. Jonathan Wener, chairman of Canderel also shared his reasons for the annual event. "When my wife was diagnosed with cancer over 15 years ago, I realized I had to do something. I was told that the best way to help is to invest directly in research … This is why I created the Defi Corporatif Canderel, and I firmly believe that in this way, we can help find a cure for this dreaded disease."
According to statistics, one out of every 4 Canadians is affected by cancer in one way or another during their lifetime. Furthermore, because of budget cuts by the government in the health industry, the need for additional funds for our university cancer centres is increasing.
"The funds raised have been used for the purchase of specialized equipment and for the allocation of fellowships and studentships", explains Gerald Levy, executive director of the event since its inception. "We also gratefully acknowledge that Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life have confirmed they are participating as a Gold Sponsor this year."
Year after year, the Montreal business community contributes generously to the Defi's cause: supporting the university cancer research centres. Participating companies are encouraged to raise additional pledges and dress in costumes. It's a fun time for all!
We are also pleased to announce that Canderel, through the Défi Corporatif Canderel, has won the CIBC spirit of Leadership Award TM, presented to the top corporation throughout Canada in recognition of its corporate giving and community spirit excellence.
Corporations are registering now to take part in the annual "fun run" and donations are being accepted. To register your team or donate to this worthy cause, call (514) 847-3667.
